Twelve melancholic songs of John Mayer

John Mayer is my favorite artist for so many reasons. One of the reasons why I like him is that he pours his heart and soul into his music. Even the melancholic numbers of Mayer have a charm in them, they will make you feel like you are not alone, even when your world seems to shatter.

12. Daughters

This song won 2004 Grammy for ‘Song of the year’. John Mayer in an interview stated that his frustration about many women dealing with ‘daddy issues’ led him to write this song. Further, he clarified that he loved a woman who couldn’t love him back because of her past experiences with relationships.

Boys, you can break
You’ll find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong and boys soldier on
But boys would be gone without warmth from a woman’s good, good heart…

11. Gravity

”This is the most important song I’ve ever written, it’s a time capsule song. I will listen to it every day of my life if I need to.” ~John Mayer.

JM has poured his emotions into this song, you will love everything about it. The singing style, the bass, and the strums.

Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down
Oh, I’ll never known what makes this man
With all the love that his heart can stand
Dream of ways to throw it all away

10. Dreaming with a broken heart

This song of John Mayer depicts absolute loneliness for me. The feeling you get when you love someone but aren’t loved back. He says, “It is about when things go wrong with someone, you meet them in your dream and they are still alright but, when you wake up and realize “they hate me”.”

When you’re dreaming with a broken heart
Waking up is the hardest part
You roll outta bed and down on your knees
And for a moment you can hardly breathe
Wondering, “Was she really here?
Is she standing in my room?”
No she’s not, ’cause she’s gone, gone, gone, gone, gone….

9. Heartbreak warfare

This song by John Mayer essentially describes the end of a relationship. When misunderstandings crumble everything apart and leave you miserable. The lyrics and the music of the song capture the theme aesthetically.

How come the only way to know how high you get me
Is to see how far I fall
God only knows how much I’d love you if you let me
But I can’t break through at all.

8. Emoji of a wave

Emoji of a wave references an up and down relationship where one partner cannot stay committed and the other rides the waves of indecision.

It’s raining on the mission bell
They’re draining out the wishing well
It breaks my heart
It breaks my heart

7. All we ever do is say goodbye

It’s hard to let go of someone who gave you so much to remember. This song of John Mayer is so sad, but it explains that turning point where you realize that it’s not worth it to keep trying to love somebody. You have to realize and move on.

I bought a ticket on a plane
And by the time it landed, you were gone again

6. Covered in rain

There have been statements about people expecting more out of this song, but I absolutely loved it. Even for a lyrics person, I loved the ingenuity and complexity Mayer has put in the guitar work of this song. The guitar in this song says more than the lyrics.

Tonight we’re gonna order in,
Drinking wine and watchin’ CNN.
It’s dark I know, but then again
It’s the brightest thing I got

5. Stop this train

Stop this train of John Mayer captures the anxiety that young adults face as they look forward in their lives. I think the line ”so scared of getting older, I’m only good at being young” will hit everyone. It’s one of the most relatable song everyone will come through in their lives.

I’m so scared of getting older
I’m only good at being young
So I play the numbers game
To find a way to say my life has just begun

4. Whiskey, whiskey, whiskey

John Mayer explains his dependence on alcohol at a low point in his life through this song, spending days and nights drinking and waking up hungover and lonely. It is one of the saddest songs of JM.

Every night around this time
My friends and I retreated like a race
When I really start to break it down
I wouldn’t trust a girl who knew about this place

3. I will be found (lost at sea)

The feeling you get when you have nowhere to go and no one to talk to is explained beautifully by this song.

I’m a little lost at sea
I’m a little birdie in a big old tree
Ain’t nobody looking for me
Here out on the highway

2. Edge of desire

I run out of words whenever I try to talk about this song of John Mayer. This song is so close to my heart. I love every word, every tune, and every strum of this song. It’s a sad song, of course, but listening to this song when I feel sad somehow lifts me up.

Don’t say a word
Just come over and lie here with me
Cause I’m just about to set fire to everything I see
I want you so bad I’ll go back on the things I believe
There I just said it
I’m scared you’ll forget about me

1. Slow dancing in a burning room

Listen to this song a few times, and it will be your go-to song whenever you feel sad and lonely. In one way or another, we’re all slow dancing in a burning room. I wonder how someone can explain heartbreak and sadness so beautifully.

We’re goin’ down
And you can see it too
We’re goin’ down
And you know that we’re doomed
My dear
We’re slow dancing in a burnin’ room
