This article will guide you through the process of getting a G1 license in Canada. G1 is the first stage in Ontario’s Graduate Licensing program and is followed by G2 and G. The entire process of getting a full license takes about 20 months from start to finish. However, you will have five years to complete the process before you could start over.
Requirements for getting a license
To apply for a G1 license, you must be at least 16 years old. You must pass an eye test and a knowledge test.
What is a knowledge test?
You must pass a knowledge test before you could get an initial G1 license. The knowledge test is about the traffic signs and rules. The entire test is divided into two sections and contains 20 questions per section. The first section is generally about the traffic rules, you will be asked 20 questions on rules and to pass this section, you must get at least 16 questions right (80% marks). Likewise, the next section is on traffic signs and you have to score a minimum of 80% to pass this section as well. Also, you will have to pay CAD 159.50 to appear in a knowledge test. These fees are inclusive of your knowledge test, and the road test that you will be giving in the future. Also, you can retake the exam the same day if you don’t pass it the first time for $16.
How do you prepare for a knowledge test?
I recommend everyone be well-prepared for the knowledge test beforehand. Not only will this save you $16 but also the additional time for waiting to retake the test. You must study the Ontario Driver’s Handbook issued by the MTO. You can find the book in many places including
- Study it online from the province’s website. https://www.ontario.ca/document/official-mto-drivers-handbook/getting-your-drivers-licence
- Purchase a copy from Publications Ontario and have them shipped to you.
- Purchase a copy from your local Drive test center.
- Purchase a copy from an authorized retailer.
- Study from other online resources including https://www.apnatoronto.com/ontario-g1-test/
Should you book an appointment for the test?
No, making an appointment is not necessary to take the G1 knowledge test. However, the testing facilities are often busy, so I advise you to arrive early. Most of the drive test centers are open from 7 AM and getting there early enough will greatly reduce your waiting time. When you get to the center, get a ticket from a self-serving kiosk and wait in the waiting area unless your number is called.

Once you are called, you go to the booth, give your ID and details, and give an eye test. Afterward, they will give you some papers and ask you to go to the computers for appearing in the knowledge test.
Is there any time limit to the test?
The good news is, there isn’t any. Unless you are 100% sure about the answer, do not go for it.
Getting a temporary G1 license
Once you’ve passed the vision test and knowledge test, you will be given a temporary G1 license. This paper license will be valid for 90 days. The provincial government will mail you a plastic license with your photo and signature within that time. If you don’t get a license within that time, you must contact the MTO.
Conditions and restrictions for G1
The G1 license is very restrictive and any failure to comply with the regulations will result in the suspension of your license. All the G1 drivers must:
- Drive only when they have a full license holder with four years of experience in the front seat.
- Always have a blood alcohol level of 0.00%.
- Ensure that all passengers are wearing seatbelts and the number of passengers is not more than the number of seatbelts available.
- Not drive on 400 series highways or high-speed expressways.
- Not drive between 11:00 PM to 5 AM.
The waiting period for G1 license holders until they can appear in a G1 road test is generally 12 months. However, taking your G1 road test can be fast-tracked if you have taken an approved driver’s training course or you have a driving experience outside Canada (in your home country maybe). If you are taking training, the time will be reduced to 8 months. If you have a driving experience in your home country, make sure that you bring a certificate of experience issued by the governmental body.
