How to craft an effective SOP for Canada?

I have seen many foreign study aspirants struggling to craft an effective statement of purpose (SOP) to submit to the embassy. Be it Canada, UK, USA, your application is accepted or rejected based on how effective your SOP is. Since I have first-hand experience in crafting an effective SOP for Canada, I thought I could share it for your convenience.

Do it yourself!

The first thing you have to remember before writing an SOP is that the SOP is your story; asking others to do it for you would put you at greater risk. However, you can ask your seniors to review and edit.

Do not jam your SOP with heavy words

Second, you don’t have to write big and fancy words. Since your SOP should also reflect your IELTS/PTE writing score, clogging it with heavy words is a waste of time and effort.

Answer all these questions

Many students fail to match the course they selected with their past education and end up getting rejected. Even though the course you applied for in Canada does not match your educational and professional history, explain it. Explain why you desire to change your course and career path.

Do not forget to explain these things

Likewise, you have to explain gaps (if you have any), previous rejections (if you have any), and your intention to return to Nepal. You have to strongly convince the VISA Officer that you intend to return to Nepal after completing your study, in every way possible. You can show your family ties, your property, or tell them that you have to take care of your family business. Just let them believe that you won’t stay in Canada (even if you have plans to).

Keep your SOP simple and real

The bottom line is it must be realistic. Your story shouldn’t sound made-up. It must be genuine and believable. Remember that the VISA Officer is also a human being and he/she will understand. Do not write more than two pages. Make it short and sweet! If you need help with a sample of a good SOP for a Canadian study permit, visit here Sample of SOP for Canadian Student VISA.
